Titanium felt (also known as titanium fiber felt or titanium paper) is a highly specialized material produced by compressing and sintering micron-sized titanium fibers into a porous, three-dimensional mat. Because of its high porosity and excellent corrosion resistance, it is a critical component in next-generation energy and filtration systems.
Here are the primary applications:
1. Green Hydrogen Production (PEM Electrolyzers)
This is the most significant modern application for titanium felt. It is used as the Liquid/Gas Diffusion Layer (LGDL) or Porous Transport Layer (PTL) in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers.
Why Titanium? The anode side of an electrolyzer is highly acidic and oxidative. Standard carbon-based materials would corrode instantly, but titanium forms a protective oxide layer.
Function: It facilitates the flow of water to the catalyst layer and allows the resulting oxygen bubbles to escape efficiently.
2. Fuel Cells
Similar to its role in electrolysis, titanium felt is used in PEM Fuel Cells, particularly those operating in harsh or high-voltage environments where carbon gas diffusion layers might degrade. It ensures uniform gas distribution and electrical conductivity.
3. Advanced Filtration
Titanium felt is used for "deep filtration" of highly corrosive fluids or high-temperature gases.
Chemical Processing: Filtering strong acids or alkaline solutions that would destroy stainless steel or polymer filters.
Aviation & Aerospace: High-temperature hydraulic fluid filtration.
Food & Beverage: Used when high-purity, non-leaching materials are required for steam or liquid filtration.
4. Flow Batteries
In large-scale energy storage systems like Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB), titanium felt can be used as an electrode material. Its high surface area and low electrical resistance help improve the efficiency of the electrochemical reactions.
