Titanium MMO (Mixed Metal Oxide) anodes / electrodes —often referred to as DSA (Dimensionally Stable Anodes)—are titanium substrates (rods, sheets, or meshes) coated with a layer of noble metal oxides (typically Iridium or Ruthenium).
Because they remain stable and do not dissolve during electrolysis, they are the industry standard for several critical applications:
1. Cathodic Protection (CP)
MMO anodes are widely used in Impressed Current Cathodic Protection (ICCP) to prevent corrosion in steel structures.
Pipelines & Well Casings: Tubular MMO anodes are installed in "deep groundbeds" to protect underground infrastructure.
Storage Tanks: Ribbon anodes are placed in a grid pattern under the floor of above-ground storage tanks.
Reinforced Concrete: Mesh anodes are embedded in concrete to prevent the rebar from rusting in bridges, piers, and parking garages.
Marine Structures: Used on ship hulls, sheet piles, and offshore platforms.
2. Water Treatment & Disinfection
Their ability to generate oxidants directly from water or brine makes them essential for sanitation.
Electro-Chlorination: Converting salt (NaCl) in water into sodium hypochlorite (liquid bleach) for swimming pools and industrial cooling towers.
Ballast Water Treatment: Disinfecting seawater on ships to prevent the spread of invasive species.
Wastewater Treatment: Breaking down organic pollutants and dyes in industrial effluent via electrochemical oxidation.
Drinking Water: Municipal systems use them for in-situ disinfectant generation, reducing the need to transport hazardous chlorine gas.
3. Electrometallurgy & Plating
MMO anodes have largely replaced lead and graphite anodes in metal recovery due to their efficiency and "clean" operation.
Electrowinning: Extracting metals like Copper, Nickel, Zinc, and Gold from ore-leached solutions. Unlike lead anodes, MMO anodes don't contaminate the metal product with lead sludge.
Electroplating: Used in high-speed plating of steel (galvanizing) and PCB (Printed Circuit Board) manufacturing to deposit copper or precious metals onto surfaces.
Electrolytic Foil Production: Manufacturing the ultra-thin copper foil used in Lithium-ion batteries.
4. Chlor-Alkali Industry
This was the original commercial application for DSA technology.
Chlorine Production: MMO-coated titanium plates are used in membrane cells to produce chlorine gas, hydrogen, and caustic soda from brine.
