Titanium Grade 2 (Ti-CP) threaded rods are often called the "workhorse" of the commercially pure titanium industry. While Grade 5 is used for extreme strength, Grade 2 is selected when maximum corrosion resistance and ductility are the priorities.
Because Grade 2 is virtually inert in many aggressive environments, these rods are the standard for long-term fastening in industries where stainless steel would fail within months.
1. Marine and Offshore Engineering
Grade 2 is exceptionally resistant to seawater, salt spray, and brine. Unlike stainless steel, it is immune to pitting and crevice corrosion in stagnant or high-velocity water.
Underwater Fastening: Used for securing submerged pipelines, offshore oil rig components, and subsea sensors.
Desalination Plants: Critical for threaded connections in evaporators and heat exchangers where hot, concentrated brine is processed.
Shipbuilding: Propeller shaft assemblies and hull-mounted hardware.
2. Chemical and Petrochemical Processing
Threaded rods are used to seal reactors and mount piping systems that handle highly oxidizing or corrosive fluids.
Acid Handling: Resists nitric acid, chromic acid, and organic acids.
Chlor-Alkali Industry: Immune to wet chlorine gas and hypochlorite (bleach) solutions, making it ideal for electrolytic cells and bleach washers.
Waste Recovery: Used in systems that recover industrial chemicals from wastewater.
3. Medical and Pharmaceutical
Titanium's biocompatibility (the body does not reject it) and non-magnetic nature make Grade 2 rods essential for healthcare environments.
MRI Equipment: Since Grade 2 is non-magnetic, it is used to build the support structures and housings for MRI machines without causing image distortion.
Prosthetic Support: While Grade 5 is used for load-bearing implants, Grade 2 threaded rods are often used in external fixation devices and laboratory equipment.
Cleanroom Hardware: Resists the aggressive sterilization chemicals used in pharmaceutical manufacturing.
4. Energy and Power Generation
Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD): Used in "scrubbers" that remove sulfur dioxide from power plant emissions. These environments are hot and acidic, which would destroy traditional galvanized or stainless hardware.
Geothermal Power: Resists the highly mineralized and corrosive steam pulled from the earth.
